THE FREEDOM COME ALL YE
This magnificent song "Freedom Come-All-Ye" is a Scots language socialist and anti-imperialist song written by Hamish Henderson in 1960.
One of Henderson's most important songs, it presents a non-romantic view of the role of the Scots in the world at the time it was written. It describes a wind of change blowing through Scotland and the world, sweeping away exploitation and imperialism. It renounces the tradition of the Scottish soldier both as imperial cannon-fodder and colonial oppressor, mourning the loss of youth sent to invade foreign nations, and looks to a future society which is multiracial and just.
THE SLAVES LAMENT (ROBERT BURNS 1792)
THE SLAVES LAMENT
This Video is the heroic story of Senge Peih (Joseph Cinqué), a rice farmer from West Africa who in 1839 was forced into slavery, rose up against his captors onboard the Spanish slave ship (La Amistad) and eventually won his freedom taking on the Supreme court of the United state of America.
His story helped turn the tide in America leading to the abolition of Slavery. This song by Robert Burns is a fitting tribute to this man and also a tribute to the 12.5 million Africans captured, enslaved and shipped to the New World, many of whom did not survive the journey.
THE MASSACRE OF GLENCOE
In the year 1692 one of the most heinous state sponsored crimes in European history took place. A group of the soldiers from the Argyll regiment attacked their hosts at three dwellings around the village of Glencoe in the North west Highlands of Scotland. 38 members of the MacDonald clan were killed with another 40 dying of exposure due to the freezing winter weather.
It was an incident that appalled the nation at the time and continues to shock to this day. The murder ballad tells the story of this event and is entitled The massacre of Glencoe.
